For years, parents have sent their children to school and end up finding their children retained in a particular grade level or flunking a particular subject. Due to this pattern, some parents might think that their children are not paying enough attention, are cutting glasses or simply their children are not smart enough. Some of the reasons may be true but we have to keep in mind that the teaching style in the classroom is not designed to fit a child's learning capacity. In other words, it is up to your child how to cope with the teaching style. Since not all children have that particular capacity, some parents would decide to home school their children. In home schooling, a particular time has to be spent teaching with the child. In order to be able to tell how much time you will spend, here are some factors. 1. Learning capacity. Each child has different levels of learning. Some children are capable of understanding the lesson in just one discussion. Others need a more thorough discussion and for some a more detailed and elaborate discussion has to be done in order to get the message across. For children that are considered fast learners, less time has to be spent discussing a particular topic. Lagging the topic will only result to them getting bored. Children who are a bit slower may need more time, a more detailed discussion. In addition, you will also have to provide more examples relating to that particular topic in order for them to understand it better. 2. Number of siblings. If you are only homeschooling one child, then time won't be a problem because you only have to deal with one person. You can teach your child the lesson in a more personal way and you can attend to his needs immediately. If you are homeschooling two or more children, then you will have to spend a little more time because you will have to make sure that each one is able to understand the lesson. If one fails to understand, you will have to start from the top again and probably go through the lesson a little bit slower than you usually do. 3. Method or approach. There are different ways to teach a home schooled child. Some would use worksheets; others would use games while others would use a more classroom like approach where there is a blackboard and the child sits and listens. There are various types of teaching methods for home schooled children. Some of these methods may take up some time. If you are using worksheets, it would only be right that you allot enough time for your child to answer it and enough time for you to check it. The time spent on each approach will vary depending also on your child's learning capacity. 4. Age. The child's capacity to grasp a particular topic will also rely on his age. Children at higher levels tend to understand faster as compared to those who are at lower levels. Other than that, young children have a very short attention span so you may have to take frequent breaks in order to recharge their interest. Keeping young children still for longer than one hour may bore them and it they may end up not being able to understand the lesson at all. |
